Why do we need Entrance Matting?

Why do we need Entrance Matting?

Entrance mats are a vital product required for entrances in buildings. They act as barriers to stop the ingress of dirt and moisture from entering the building. Entrance mats are manufactured from many kinds of materials providing the mat with different characteristics and benefits.

What entrance mat is perfect for you?

Entrance mats can either be used inside an entrance to a building (internally), for example our Microfibre Washable Doormat or outside a building (externally), for example our Multi-Purpose Scrape Doormat. If they are used internally a carpet material is used as this will ensure moisture is removed off pedestrians’ feet when walking through.

If the entrance mat removes the moisture of people’s feet this will help with reducing the risk of slips and trips in the workplace. If a pedestrian walks into a building where there is no entrance mat or there is minimal entrance matting used, it can cause someone to slip which is not only dangerous but this can be very costly to a business.

Externally, rubber entrance mats are used outside the entrances and these tend to have open holes. The purpose of these open holes is to provide drainage for rain water and large bits of dirt to fall through and get ‘caught’ in the holes. Their coarse texture help ensure large parts of dirt is removed which will help as the indoor carpet mat will mainly focus on removing the moisture. This type of entrance mat essentially acts as the first line of defence by stopping mud coming in the building.

What is the purpose of entrance matting?

Entrance mats not only keep your employees or visitors safe but they will also help look after the floor coverings in your building; the reason for this is that entrance mats will trap the dirt and stop it traveling into the building on your large floor covering areas.

So, why buy Entrance Matting from Matting Solutions?

Matting Solutions has a wide variety of entrance mats and entrance matting systems in the range, we offer FREE delivery. Most importantly, because our entrance mats are supplied from the UK, we also have quick lead times.

What makes a good entrance mat?

What makes a good entrance mat?

What really makes a good entrance mat is down into the materials that the mat is made out of; since we currently sell over 15 styles of entrance matting, users of Entrance Matting have different expectations and needs from their mat, where hygiene is important for some, may not be as important for the standard door mat. Where no two users are the same, we can supply for ranges of needs, to make sure that you get the most out of your entrance mat. We supply mats with some of the finest materials, ranging from rubber, as a more industrial material, to coir, which is a more general door mat material, so many will wonder what makes a good entrance mat for you.

Materials on a good mat surface:

Coir

Coir doormats have proven to be from natural sources, as they are made from coconut shells, meaning that they have abilities to create a brush-like effect when stepping on/off of the mat. This ethically sourced material can be extremely effective for removing dirt and other unwanted substances that can be taken inside through sticking to shoes.

Nylon

As a result of the slightly higher cost, the synthetic material is one of the most effective ingredients to entrance matting due to its high durability, which allows it to be walked on consistently whilst keeping its insurance of not breaking. As well as this the mat has a brush-like effect similar to the coir mats, with a greater quality giving it a grand feeling.

Polypropylene

A thermal polymer, with a high melting point, allowing the mats to be used in hot climates without discolouration and deformation. Whilst being a cheap alternative to mats made out of nylon, the material also provides an excellent brushing action against shoes when walked on due to the hard, rough fibres which scrape off dirt and unwanted mud on the bottom of footwear. These mats despite the low costs, have a professional and luxurious aesthetic which is bound to impress, giving perfect uses in hospitality industries, our favourite one we sell is the High Performance Superdry Doormat.

Natural/Nitrile Rubber

Rubber entrance mats have the greatest durability out of all the mats we sell here at Matting Solutions, which is why they are perfectly suited to outside environments, such as the Ringmat – Tough Outdoor Rubber Mat. Also, the greater durability gives a long lifespan for the mats in comparison to other materials which make entrance matting. The rubber mats have holes in the surface, which allows for efficient drainage of liquids, which causes the outside mats to be effective anti-slip mats, as they prevent trips and other hazards.

Microfibre

Microfibre mats are typically made of polypropylene and Nylon yarn, which makes the fibres extremely thin. These entrance mats have excellent drainage benefits, due to its ability to increase its’ surface area. The drainage benefits can make microfibre useable for doormats, as they can prevent the bringing-in of liquids inside, as they are wiped off the bottom of footwear as they come into contact with the mat. As well as this, the microfibre has great drying abilities, allowing the mat to be as effective in its uses for longer time periods, without becoming wet. Pick up yours in our store today Microfibre Washable Doormat.

Materials on a good mat backing:

Nitrile rubber

Nitrile is the most renowned material on matting backing, mainly due to its hardcore abilities, allowing the mat to withstand lots of different environments. These may include high/low temperatures, or even water/oily conditions which have little effect of the durability of this mat. All these reasons are why nitrile rubber backed mats have a longer lifespan than other materials in the market. One mat containing vinyl backing at Matting Solutions is the Plush Doormat.

PVC

PVC is an acronym for Polyvinyl chloride plastic, is a lower cost option which is suitable for most climates and different environments. It is a material which cannot however be used in extremely cold environments, as it is prone to cracking and becoming brittle. Here at Matting Solutions, we sell a PVC backed mat called the Ribbed Carpet Doormat.

Which mat is right for your entrance?

Which mat is right for your entrance?

Deciding on which entrance mat to choose can be a bit of a minefield, especially when you look at how many different styles, types and materials are included in our large entrance matting range. However, don’t worry in this blog you will find a matting solution that fits your needs, whether that be for personal, commercial, public or general use.

What is the best matting for you?

First and foremost you may be looking into purchasing an entrance mat as you want to benefit from one (or more) key features of our entrance mats. Before choosing which mat is right for you, it is important to note the key roles that you will experience by having an entrance mat. To start with, entrance mats give the area an increase in safety underfoot as it helps to reduce the risk of slipping when walking on smooth floors, it also increases the amount of dirt and moisture that gets trapped on entry, protecting the interior floor surfaces and coverings and finally the appearance as it can leave an impression when entering or leaving an entranceway.

Outdoor vs Indoor entrance matting

The first decision you need to make is whether you are looking for an outdoor or indoor entrance mat. On the whole outdoor entrance matting is made of more durable materials like rubber and coir as they need to be more hardwearing. This is due to the fact that outdoor mats are usually equipped to remove the bulk of dirt, mud, snow and any other debris that has been collected on your shoes. On the other hand indoor door mats are usually made of carpet or softer materials (usually with a rubber backing) so that when you brush your feet over them the carpet layer soaks up moisture whilst staying in place. Again outdoor mats and indoor usually differ when it comes to cleaning too. With the nature of outdoor mats being durable and hard wearing they can normally just be hosed/jet washed down whereas indoor mats may need more care by either hand washing or placing them in the washing machine.

How deep should my entrance matting be?

This is one of the most important factors when it comes to choosing the right entrance mat. As there need to be enough length in order to remove as much dirt, mud or other debris as possible as well as ensuring there is optimum performance on moisture wiping and absorption.

People don’t tend to wipe their feet when entering public buildings for example supermarkets and shopping centres, so it is important that the length of matting is long enough to allow moisture and debris to be removed as people walk on the matting. Our experts recommend that a minimum of six steps should be taken in order to remove as much debris and dirt as possible.

Although this won’t be a necessary guide for personal use, e.g. household door mats, this guide will however give an indication into how long your entrance matting needs to be, depending on the footfall of your entranceway.

We would recommend:

  • Less than 80 people an hour = 3-4 metres of entrance matting
  • Up to 400 people per hour = 6-7 metres of entrance matting
  • Around 800 people per hour = 8-10 metres of entrance matting
  • Around 2500 people per day = 9-12 metres of entrance matting

Which material is ideal for an entrance mat?

Certain entrance mats in our range are designed out of specific materials to cater for certain uses/environments. We supply a wide range of entrance mats made of some of the finest materials including; coir, nylon, polypropylene, microfibre and natural and nitrile rubber. To see what material is suitable for your needs, check out our blog on what materials make a good entrance mat.

Where can Social Distancing Products be used?

Where can social distancing products be used?

The purpose of social distancing products

The use of Social Distancing products has become critical for the U.K since COVID-19 hit us back in March 2020. Social distancing products will help enable any business to protect, not only their visitors/customers, but their own employees. Social distancing products can be used in any industry such as: hospitality, healthcare, commercial, education- the list goes on!

Reminding people to keep a social distancing from one another

We have social distancing mats which have been designed to help remind the public of the 2m distancing rule that is recommended for us to achieve, where possible as per the Government guidelines. The Social distancing mats are perfect to use in areas where customers may be queuing in a shop, employees working in a warehouse together or in a school and trying to remind pupils to keep their distancing from one another.

Social distancing mats

The social distancing mats are available in the 2m length meaning it is an efficient solution to lay in areas to enforce social distancing. The positives of using the mats rather than the tapes is that the social distancing mats will last much longer, tapes generally start to curl up over a period of time. The social distancing mats can also be picked up and deployed into other areas where required. The social distancing mats have a vinyl backing helping it stay in place accompanied by a PVC ramped diminishing strip ensuring they are not a trip hazard.

Our range of social distancing products

Our vast variety of Social distancing products range from social distancing mats (we have different sizes and prints available!), to disinfectant Hygienic Floor Mats, Safety Screens and Hazard Warning Tapes.

Safety Screens

The safety screens are unique as they are manufactured from a flexible PVC material meaning they are very simple to install and can accommodate most sized desks! They are installed using a very strong magnet meaning that in the future, they can be disposed of very easily and no damage done to the furniture.

What are the benefits of social distancing products?

What are the benefits of Social-Distancing Products?

Social distancing is vital to decreasing the rate of infection

While there are a huge number of benefits to our social distancing products, including acting as a reminder to users and actually helping to increase business (as customers are now more aware of precautions businesses are taking to protect them), the key benefit is assisting with reducing the spread of airborne viruses, such as Covid-19. The UK continues with its plans to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, and when restrictions can be eased, such as non-essentials retail reopening, social distancing is a vital way to ensure the number of cases does not increase, in order to continue moving forward with the government’s strategy safely.

Where is Covid-19 spreading?

In places such as supermarkets, retail and public transport the number of people inside an enclosed area are often high, and therefore the spread of the virus can occur more quickly and easily, if one person is already infected. This is not to scare you from ever going on a bus again, however, as we have a solution, let’s look at the science behind our matting.

Maintaining a safe physical distance from one another

As referenced above, the main purpose of the social distancing products we offer at #MattingSolutions is that they act as reminders to the users to keep a safe distance from other people, which as we are all now aware, has a number of essential benefits to helping to limit the spread of Covid-19.

The way the virus is spread is through the transition of human droplets, released through actions such as sneezing, coughing and general close contact, as this is an airborne infection. Maintaining a safe physical distance from others limits the spread of these human droplets, due to the droplets having to travel further to infect the other individuals, therefore minimising the likelihood of contracting Covid-19 and other infections which are airborne.

Social distancing at 2m in the UK

There have been many investigations to find the safest social boundaries, and different countries use different guidelines, although the UK has chosen to keep social distancing at 2m, as this is much safer than 1m or 1.5m. Scientists in the UK based this guidance on the fact that the spread of droplets is increased when an infected person is only 1m away from others, compared to 2m, by up to 10 times. This is why the our matting is 2m long, to emphasise the important message, further helping to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and other airborne infectious diseases.

What anti-fatigue mat should I choose?

What Anti-Fatigue Mat should I choose?

Wondering what anti-fatigue mat is right for your workplace? Then look no further than our guide to help find the right solution for your working environment.

Trying to determine which anti-fatigue matting is suitable can be a bit of a minefield. At Matting Solutions we pride ourselves on having a large variety of ‘matting solutions’ for many applications! However, due to the large range of products available it can be quite confusing to find out what mat is right for you. As you can see from our anti-fatigue matting range, we have three different options available. We have specific sized mats that are suitable for work benches or areas where people are standing still for a long period of time, interlocking tiles to provide a solution for large, unique areas and also anti-fatigue mats that come in rolls to cover large production lines or to be cut to size.

A guide to choosing the right anti-fatigue mat

What impact does the environment you are placing your anti-fatigue mat impact the mat you choose.

Your first thought in the process should be to look at the specific area and environment where you are looking to install an anti-fatigue mat. Generally, products with a ‘solid surface’ are more suitable for areas which are dry and ‘open holed’ mats are suitable for wet areas as liquids can drain through the matting and prevent any slips or trips. Are you looking at production areas where workers are standing in one specific position all day? Do you work in an engineering workshop where there are different chemicals and oils and a matting solution is required to prevent workers slipping? If the answer to these questions are yes then we would recommend our Woven PVC Anti-Fatigue Mat as it has open holes for drainage and is also oil resistant.

Foam anti-fatigue matting products

Our foam anti-fatigue matting which includes all of our ‘Orthomat’ product names is also perfect for applications where workers are standing in the same position all day on a cold concrete floor however, this mat is specifically designed for a dry environment. Our Orthomat Anti-Fatigue products will provide relief to employee’s feet and help stimulate blood circulation around the body, this will in turn help combat Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s) as well as having many other benefits.

Mats, rolls or interlocking tiles?

When looking at other applications, such as distribution centres or warehouses, we would recommend either rolls or modular tiles as they are perfect for these larger areas. Our modular tiles, such as the Anti-Fatigue Step Tiles or the Bubbled Detail Anti-Fatigue Interlocking Tiles, also come with an option of black or yellow (hazard) ramped edging which are more suitable for trolleys to run over, as well as increasing the awareness of the mat and therefore reducing the trip hazard. Most of our anti-fatigue mats can come in lengths of up to 18.3m so take a look in the specific product page and explore the size dropdown list if it is a whole roll you are looking for.

Of course, if you would like to know any further information about our products, or are struggling to find the right anti-fatigue solution for your company, please do not hesitate to contact us at Matting Solutions and we would be more than happy to help.

What are the benefits of anti-fatigue mats?

What are the benefits
of anti-fatigue mats?

The use of all anti-fatigue mats has shown extreme differences in the health of those who have used them. When standing up for long periods of time, especially on hard, cold, concrete floors, it is proven that the chances of poor posture in the future is increased, which can in turn lead to bone and muscle problems, such as osteoporosis and musculoskeletal disorders and also puts the circulatory system under pressure. There are not many ways of getting around this problem, with sitting down may be the only resolution in the past. However, modern technology has allowed for the life-changing anti-fatigue mats to be made and sold, for reasonable pricing, which has proven to help many people in the workplace.

Research behind anti-fatigue mats

Studies have shown that 68% of all people who stand up for prolonged time in different working environments have found that using anti-fatigue mats has had a positive effect on well being of staff, and a positive impact on their working life. Also studies have shown that 20% of workers in Europe experience muscular pain, nearly 25% suffer back pain and 50% have complained about working in painful/tiring positions.

Man with back pain

Main benefits of anti-fatigue mats

The main benefits of the use of the anti-fatigue mats when working stood up over long periods of time are that it can help to reduce: muscular pains in the back, feet and legs; aches and stiffness; varicose veins risks; circulation problems by reducing blood pooling, where blood sits in the valve pockets in veins, preventing blood flow and blood circulation; and risks of serious health conditions. These mats also reduce fatigue in the workplace for employees, helping them to keep working without the heavy feel of legs, something which many can agree is not a comfortable feeling.

Slip resistant anti-fatigue mats

The unspoken benefit of a number of anti-fatigue matts in our range is the fact that they are also non-slip, which has the effect of preventing work accidents such as slips and trips. This means that slippery surfaces can be resolved as well as providing health benefits for all workers. The majority of our anti-fatigue mats are made from textured rubber materials and have a range of different surface finishes that can become naturally grippy, to ensure safety for anybody standing on these mats for extended periods of time.

If you are looking to increase the health and safety of your workplace, we would strongly recommend looking into our anti-fatigue range. We have many different mats in our range, that are suitable for different environments. If you need help then please contact us and we would be more than happy to help.
